Simulating the Adaptive Remodeling of Bone in Response to Mechanical Influences using ANSYS

چکیده

Bone remodeling refers to the self-optimizing behavior of bone tissue in response to a mechanical stimulus, a natural phenomenon producing strong structures with minimal weight. This paper describes BORA, an iterative finite element method incorporated into ANSYS which simulates the biological mechanism of bone remodeling. The equations relating adaptive changes in bone density to the internal stresses and strains are presented together with the methods used for implementing the density evolution equations into ANSYS. Advanced features such as an adaptive time stepping scheme, solution tracking, and results visualization utilities were developed with the goal of making BORA an efficient engineering tool that is convenient to use.

Metalloproteinases, Mechanical Factors and Vascular Remodeling

Chronic increases in arterial blood flow elicit an adaptive response of the arterial wall, leading to vessel enlargement and reduction in wall shear stress to physiological baseline value. Release of nitric oxide from endothelial cells exposed to excessive shear is a fundamental step in the remodeling process, and potentially triggers a cascade of events, including growth factor induction and m...

2 Techniques and Applications of Adaptive Bone Remodeling

Despite the apparent inanimate nature of bone, bone is a dynamic living material constantly being renewed and reconstructed throughout the lifetime of an individual. Bone deposition and bone resorption typically occur concurrently, so that bone is remodeled continually. It is this adaptive remodeling process, driven partially in response to functional requirements, that distinguishes living str...

An Investigation in the Cellular Mechanisms of Bone Remodeling Using a Hybrid Cellular Automaton Approach

by Charles L. Penninger One of the most intriguing aspects of bone is its ability to grow, repair damage, adapt to mechanical loads, and maintain mineral homeostasis. It is generally accepted that bone adaptation occurs in response to the mechanical demands of our daily activities; moreover, strain and microdamage have been implicated as potential stimuli that regulate this sophisticated proces...

Adaptive Tunable Vibration Absorber using Shape Memory Alloy

This study presents a new approach to control the nonlinear dynamics of an adaptive absorber using shape memory alloy (SMA) element. Shape memory alloys are classified as smart materials that can remember their original shape after deformation. Stress and temperature-induced phase transformations are two typical behaviors of shape memory alloys. Changing the stiffness associated with phase tran...

Temperature in bone drilling process: Mathematical modeling and Optimization of effective parameters (TECHNICAL NOTE)

Bone drilling process is the most prominent process in orthopedically surgeries and curing bone breakages. It is also very common in dentistry and bone sampling operations. Due to complexity of the material that is machined, bone, and the sensitivity of the process, bone drilling is one of the most important, common and sensitive processes in biomedical engineering field. The most critical prob...
